Young sugar beet plants are sensitive to pests and competition. Therefore, it is important to regularly monitor your crops. This is what needs to be done when control thresholds are exceeded.

For a good start, young beet plants need attention. Pay particular attention now to aphids and flea beetles as well as grasses. The Chamber of Agriculture of North Rhine-Westphalia provides current recommendations.

Control thresholds for aphids partially exceeded

Last week, 45 locations in North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany) were surveyed for aphids. At 4 locations, isolated green peach aphids were found. The infestation was still below the control threshold of 10% affected plants. Black bean aphids were found on 39 sugar beet fields, and on 22 fields, the infestation exceeded the control threshold of 30% affected plants.

Monitor flea beetles and click beetles

In addition to aphids, other pests can also affect young sugar beets. These include, for example, flea beetles or click beetles. In most cases, treatment is not necessary. However, if the control threshold of 20% leaf area loss for flea beetles is exceeded, a treatment with 0.075 l/ha of Karate Zeon (B4) can be applied.

For click beetles, which damage sugar beets above ground, a control threshold of 20% damaged plants or 10 beetles per plant applies. In this case, a treatment with, for example, 0.075 l/ha of Decis forte (B2) may be recommended.

What to do with problems related to grasses and millets

If you encounter issues with millets or grasses, plan a treatment with graminicides between the 2nd and 3rd NAK. The treatment should be carried out no earlier than five days after the 2nd NAK. In cases of known Fop resistance, the use of Focus Ultra or Select 240 EC is recommended.

Additionally, Spectrum can be used against millets. However, the application rate of graminicides should be reduced when used in combination with Spectrum. If grasses remain in the Conviso Smart System after treatment with Conviso One, remove them to avoid resistance!

Please pay attention to the approval, instructions for use, and regional guidelines when using plant protection products.
