Turnaround on Glyphosate: Where Roundup Future is now allowed to be used

A club had raised an objection against the approval. Now it is allowed to be used - but only in certain cultures.

A Club Raised Objection Against Approval

In March, the Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) suspended the approval of the new glyphosate product Roundup Future. Now, the total herbicide is allowed again in many applications. The German Environmental Aid Association (DUH) had filed an objection shortly after the initial approval of Roundup Future. As a result, the product could not be sold or used. agrarheute extensively reported on the back and forth with Roundup Future.

Where Roundup Future Can Now Be Used

In the meantime, the BVL listened to the approval holder, Bayer. With a decision on April 24, 2025, the authority concludes that the herbicide can be used again for various applications including: against monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous weeds in arable crops, fruits (excluding raspberries), grapes (not against bindweed), on meadows, pastures, and lawns, in root and tuber vegetables, vegetables, asparagus, and various woody plants. Detailed approval information can be found here at the BVL. It also states that all other applications not listed are still not allowed.

Roundup Future as the Successor to Roundup Powerflex

The manufacturer introduced Roundup Future as the successor to Roundup Powerflex this season. Bayer did not apply for an extension of approval for the previous product. The new product was supposed to be "a forward-looking, new product with a modern formulation." Roundup Future contains 500 g/l of glyphosate as a water-soluble concentrate, was approved by the BVL with a maximum application rate of 3.2 l/ha, and has a wide range of applications (including arable crops, vegetable crops, fruit trees, viticulture, ornamental plants). According to the manufacturer, it should be rainproof after an hour and have the shortest possible crop rotation times due to approval requirements.
